One Tree, One Spoon.

Keisuke Masuda arrived at the studio by bicycle, everything loaded onto the bike and trailer he'd ridden all the way from Kawaguchi. Tools, wood blocks, the aprons, all of it. That set the tone for the weekend.

The cherry tree we'd been given from the lot next door turned out to be exactly the right wood for the job. Dense enough to hold shape, responsive under the knife. Better than anyone had expected.

The first cuts felt awkward for most people. But something shifted as the session went on a loosening, a settling in. Adults who'd spent the week at their desks, a primary school kid working alongside them, everyone eventually finding their own rhythm with the knife. The studio filled with the smell of fresh wood and the sound of quiet concentration.

At the end of each session, ice cream from KAIKO COFFEE in the same building was brought up to the studio. Everyone tried their spoon with it, how it felt in the hand, how the bowl scooped. Then went back to carve a little more. The idea was to make something you can immediately use, and refine it based on how it actually feels.

The workshop sold out both days. We're bringing it back in autumn, when the heat lets up.
